Our Curriculum Intent
Our objective in the Performing Arts department is to nurture passionate, imaginative and inquisitive individuals, who see the world from an artistic perspective, enjoying and exploring past and present art forms from a variety of different cultures.
The Performing Arts curriculum prepares students to become independent and creative individuals. A range of topics allow students to develop an understanding and appreciation of the arts formed in a contemporary society and throughout the world. These themes are explored through a range of different creative styles, practitioners and mediums.
Furthermore, the Performing Arts curriculum promotes a sense of self-worth, encourages confidence, resilience and develops relationships.

Accommodation and resources
Teaching is divided into three flexible spaces - two music rooms and a drama studio. The music rooms are equipped with new mac mini computers, keyboards, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitars, 2 marimbas, 3 drum kits, a grand piano and a wide range of world percussion, including specialist African and Latin American instruments and a range of classroom percussion. There are 3 practice rooms each with a piano.
The drama studio is a large flexible space complete with professional staging, full lighting rig and specialist technical control room with lighting and sound desks. There are a range of drama resources available for use in lessons such as staging blocks, trestle masks, neutral masks and a fully stocked costume and props cupboard.
Extra curricular activities
The department provides an extensive range of extra curricular activities, catering for every age group and ability. Sessions that currently take place include weekly rehearsals for Samba Band, Choir, Harmonix (Vocal Group), Band Rehearsals, Dance Club, Drama Club and Performing Arts Award Club.
The department takes part in a huge number of events each year - within the school these include three concerts, a carol concert, plays, a GCSE Drama evening and performances as part of presentation evening. One of the big concerts each year is a Summer Festival which is held outside and provides students with the opportunity to perform in a different setting. We have a yearly themed concert in the spring term, so far we have done Night at the Musicals, Night at the Movies and Through the Ages. We have also performed in the Canterbury Festival for many years. Every two years students from the Samba Band, Jazz Band and Choir undertake a European tour. So far we have travelled to Paris, Germany, Italy and Spain, France and Belgium.
