On Monday 8th January we were invited to attend the second annual Swale Youth Conference ,which is Kent’s only Youth Sector Conference. Held at the Holiday Inn in Sittingbourne, our students joined other schools and organisations to discuss various issues which directly affect the youth of Swale. Some topics included in the discussions focussed on the expense of travelling around the area on public transport, the downside of Social media and tips to make a good impression when applying for jobs or apprenticeships. Speaking to over 70 delegates two Fulston Manor School 6th Formers, Katie Upton and Yagmur Karaoglan gave passionate speeches on the effects of body image at a young age and were asked questions in the open forum. All of the students found the day interesting and insightful. Katie said ‘It was great to hear that volunteering within the community had such an impact on potential employers. Employers are looking for that extra something before inviting people to interview so we need to take social action seriously’. A fast paced game of Kahoot ended the day with all of the questions relating to topics discussed. The three prizes of a Kindle Fire, A Segway Tour for two and a chance to use the huge slide at the old Olympic park were all won by our students which was the icing on the cake!
