On Monday 5^th March, 28 students journeyed to London's Royal Festival Hall to hear a magnificent performance by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, geared towards the GCSE Music programme of study. This show was presented as an interactive lecture, and the students were treated to a programme called "Scene and Heard" focusing on music for stage and screen. The LPO, conducted by Rebecca Miller, performed many pieces from the schemes of work being studied by GCSE students all over the country. Pieces included diegetic music from Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho, Aaron Copland's Hoedown, and finished with A New Hope, from Star Wars. Along with Mrs Palmer and Miss H-Q, students enjoyed being able to see these pieces being performed by a world-class orchestra, and were lucky enough to meet two of the violists afterwards. Year 10 students Tilly and Rosie were excited to experience their first orchestral concert, and told Mrs Palmer afterwards that they hadn't expected such a frisson of excitement at the start of each piece! Year 9 student Emilia studiously took notes during the performance, and said that not only did she enjoy learning more about the pieces, but she understood more about music theory in general and was excited to apply this knowledge to her own instrumental practice. As usual, all students represented Fulston Manor school wonderfully, and were patient during several changes to our original transport plan due to the recent heavy snow.
